I was stationed aboard the Markab from about 1965 - 1967. I was a BT3 and worked in the ships repair department repairing valves, I made BT2 and was then the ships Oil King. I enjoyed my time aboard the ship and the deployments to westpac.

My father, Harold D. Chartrand, was an electrician's mate 3rd class who served on the Markab from the time it was taken out of mothballs in Orange TX until his discharge in December 1954. The Markab and its crew have been the basis of many stories over the years which I have enjoyed and which are part of family lore now. My father and mother Katherine, who he met while the ship was in Newport, RI, have just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary with their 9 children, 24 grandchildren and God-know-how-many great grandchildren. He is enjoying his retirement, with plenty of gardening, fishing and hunting.

My husband served aboard the USS Markab from March of 1966 through Dec of 1969. His name was Roy Douglas and was a machines mate. Does anyone remember him getting off the ship in Vietnam? The VA would like proof of boot on land for my claim. He was on the Western Pacific deployment from June to December in 1967. I don't know any more than that. Thanks for the help.

I came across an old photo of my father from June 1967 aboard USS Markab. I couldn't decipher the writing on the back so I looked up the vessel name online. Came across this website and would like to post the photo of my father onboard. His name was Richard Lee Amidon. I don't know what he did in the Navy as he passed away when I was 10. But if there is a way to find out more information...I'd love to be contacted please!?

Admin reply: Go to www.markab.org/images/amidon.jpg to see the picture
